The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), adopted in 2000, saw India commit to global development targets. Health-related MDGs included: MDG 4 (Reduce Child Mortality), MDG 5 (Improve Maternal Health), and MDG 6 (Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and other diseases).

Government initiatives like the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) significantly bolstered maternal and child health. These led to substantial reductions in Infant Mortality Rate, Under-Five Mortality Rate, and Maternal Mortality Ratio. Disease control programs, including RNTCP for TB and NACP for HIV/AIDS, achieved remarkable success, notably polio eradication and effective containment of HIV/AIDS and TB.

Despite progress, challenges persist, including regional disparities in healthcare access and quality, nutritional deficiencies, sanitation issues, and inadequate public health infrastructure in remote areas. While India made significant strides towards health-related MDGs, sustained efforts are crucial to address remaining gaps and ensure equitable health outcomes.
